[영문초록(Abstract)]
Human beings are social members who transmit direct and indirect messages to others by conscious or unconcious nonverbal behavior.
Particularly, between dissimlar cultures, there are difficulties in communication with one another. Symbolic sign systems, such as hand gesture, gesture, and eye contact are factors used as communication tools that substitue the difficulties in communicating with language. However, of all the body language, the most frequently used is the hand language. Hand language is a symbolic sign system based on cultural basis.
For this reason, hand language differs in its form and meaning depending on the culture's comlicated cowcatcher. Therefore, hand language has a characteristic of not being interpreted in a single meaning.
Depending on the location, different hand gestures are only effective resources when one has cultural knowledge. Therefore, without enough understanding of numerous different cultures, it is not possible to accurately understand a non-speaking communication and never can the communication be achieved.
Hand Language between cultures need to be understood and interpreted, in that hand language is not a independent action-pattern, but a cultural context of a nonverbal communication. The signs of hand language is the cause for amplified cultural complication. Therefore, to maintain a smooth communication in a multicultural society, the cross cultural study of nonverbal communication must be discernmented.
Especially in Asia, which hold 60% of entire Earth’s population, languages such as Korean, Chinese, Indi-Iranian, Tibetan, Mongolian, Tungus language, Thai, Tagalog, and Japanese coexist.
Therefore, more than any other place, studies of non-speaking communication is required. Furthermore, hand gestures created from the religious values and customs of Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, and Confucianism, create more confusion within the non-speaking communication. With so many different cultures and its backgrounds, synthetic and systematic study of hand language is essential in Asia. However, in spite of the importance of accurate cognition, the study of hand-language is very insufficient in Asia.
Thereupon, this experiment classifies, compares, and analyzes the non-speaking communication: hand-language, of Korea and Asia. By doing so, it tests the Asia's knowledge of Korea’s hand gestures.
The summation of experiment’s results are as follows:
1) Similarity of Hand Language of Korea and Asia were analyzed on a cultural perspective. As a result, authoritarianism and collectivism’s regional and social class distinction as well as perpendicularity and respect, modesty and internal expression were common factors found.
Also, oriental values that pursue conservative behavior patterns by brilliant hand language are insincerely recognized as well as various forms of abstract related with sex. There is a phenomenon of continuous and increase in same hand language and loan hand language in every part of Asia.
2) National particularity of Hand Language from Korea and Asia were analyzed from the perspective of culture and its comparison.
As a result, in Thai, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Indo, Islam, and Hindu, they strictly regulate the hand language made by left hand. Mongol and Nepal show characteristics of isolation, for they have independent hand language and formless hand language.
In comparison, with high levels of anxiety caused from complicated international situations, Korea has uncertainty avoidance level, which results in the most use of Hand Language in the region of Asia. Also, in a state of soberness, Koreans show controlled emotion and feelings through their actions.
However, while drunk, their emotions explode and become aggressive and show aggression. They also show aggression and suggestive through their actions.
Korea’s Hand Language never had freedom because of the rule culture of Japan and America’s influence. Similarly, Indo and Indonesia’s hand language never had freedom because their countries were colonized over a period of time by England and Netherlands.
3) A intellectual experiment was executed on Thai, Philippines, and Indonesians immigration workers on their knowledge of Korea’s hand language. As a result, those tested showed 93% of marginalization and only 7% of standardization of knowledge. Also, Thai, the multitude hand language country showed the least cognition rate of Korea’s hand language, which shows that multitude hand language is a barrier factor in non-speaking communication.
Generally, the misunderstood Korea’s hand languages were interpreted by their own cultural backgrounds. This shows interpretation of message and connection between cultures. In the other hand, there were no differences incognition interpretation in personal or national hand language.
Nonverbal communication, “Hand Language”, between different cultures serves as a barrier factor in communicating with one another. Furthermore, hand language’s knowledge is based on cultural backgrounds.
Therefore, this experiment expects to offer the necessity to maximize the strategy development in nonverbal communication and be the basis materials of behavior science. In addition, this experiment proves the correlation between non-speaking behavior system’s accurate understanding of culture and knowledge system. It proves the necessity to search an understanding and promotion of other culture’s human behavior similarities.
